The first three pictures show details of the Seattle Monorail, constructed in the 1960's to ferry people from the city centre to the World Fair, about a mile north of the centre. It is really little more than a transport anachronism but is viewed fondly by the citizens so it will remain and gain in credibility as a feature to be preserved. The supporting structures comprise rigid steel portals over the streets.
Smiths Tower below was once the tallest skyscraper on the US West Coast. It is now regarded as an important landmark in the development of US city centres. It is in full use with a lift operator who simply looks through the lift's glass doors to see if someone is waiting.
