Historic Station Platform Canopy, Richmond, Virginia
These pictures show a preserved cantilever station platform canopy at Richmomd, Virginia. Note thr arrangement of lattice beams and conventional sections transferring the loads from the cantilever roof to the cast iron columns in the centre of the platform. Note the timber roof and the way in which a length of timber is fixed over the steel beams to support the main timber above. This timber beam is called a wallplate and is used commonly in the UK where timber roof trusses are supported on masonry. Also, note the ornate bracket where the steelwork is fixed to the columns.
