The pictures show an external lift shaft at a museum in Richmond, Virginia. The structure comprises steel sections braced with steel bars. The structure was designed to withstand horizontal wind load and the normal vertical loads.

A turnbuckle has been included in each bar. By twisting the turnbuckle, the tension in each diagonal bar can be changed. There is also an adjusting mechanism at the end of each bar as shown in the third picture. Note the split pin which safeguards the connection between the diagonal bar and the main steelwork.
